The Prince and Princess of Wales and their children took part in the traditional Christmas procession. Catherine, Princess of Wales, chose a look in deep blue colours for the holiday.

King Charles III and Queen Camilla are spending their Christmas holidays at Sandringham. As is tradition, they invite royal family and friends to a service at St Mary Magdalene Church on the Norfolk estate. The Princess of Wales chose a colourful and elegant outfit for the celebration.

Catherine tucked some of her hair under a small classic feather hat, leaving loose strands of hair flowing down her back. Her Highness wore a warm turtleneck, a pleated skirt, a long blue Alexander McQueen belted coat and suede boots with a stable heel.

Catherine completed her look with an iconic piece of jewellery – Princess Diana’s sapphire earrings. The princess wears them on especially important days. William, Prince of Wales, gave the beloved jewellery of his mother after their engagement in 2010. Notably, the earrings can be transformed. They can be worn as clips or as drops. Today, Catherine preferred the second option.

The future Queen of the United Kingdom was together with her spouse and children. Prince William wore a dark blue coat, the same shade of jacket, tie and trousers and snow-white shirt. Prince George and Prince Louie were dressed in suits of a muted blue colour. Princess Charlotte opted for a dark green coat, dark dress, warm tights and ballet flats. The girl walked beside her mother, holding her hand and smiling.

Hundreds of Britons queued from early morning to get at least a glimpse of the royal family. They waved happily as the king and his many relatives made their way to the church.

Princess Diana was known to have a lot of sapphire jewellery. One of the most important pieces was a suite given to her by the Saudi royal family as a wedding gift in the late 80s. Sapphires were the chosen main stone so that Diana could wear this jewellery to match her engagement ring, which is now owned by the current Princess of Wales.

Merry Christmas to all those celebrating today! We have two outfits to cover in this post: the ensemble worn for church today and the look seen in a video the Princess taped as part of the Christmas carol concert that aired last night. We’ll begin with the outfit worn for the Christmas Day church service at Sandringham.

The King and Queen led a full complement of royal family members to St. Mary Magdalene Church.

The King and Queen led the way smiling at more than 2,000 wellwishers who had gathered to watch the traditional procession of royals to church, with many waiting hours to get a prime spot.

For much of the walk, Prince Louis held hands with Mia Tindall.

Royal enthusiasts lined the route to the church to catch a glimpse of the family during their traditional Christmas morning – some from as far afield as Washington DC, USA.

For ardent fans of the royal family, Sandringham is the place to be on Christmas Day. Hundreds wake up early and queue outside the church gates for a chance to see senior royals up close and personal.

We return to The Telgraph’s report.

It has been decades since the Duchess of York made the walk from Sandringham House to St Mary Magdalene Church with royals – normally reserved for close family – but in recent years it is thought she has been a guest for Christmas lunch.

She has won plaudits in recent months for her battle with breast cancer, praised for speaking openly about her treatment and setting an example for other women to get screened.

I believe the gentleman on the far right is Major Lt. Colonel Johnny Thompson, the King’s equerry. (Thank you to Sue for letting me know he was no longer a major!)

After the service, royal family members greeted well-wishers.

The Prince and Princess of Wales were handed flowers and their three children were given personalised wooden moneyboxes by royal fan Gemma Clark, 43. Ms Clark gives the royal children presents each Christmas – and last year handed the young Waleses novelty toys known as “gonks”.

She said: “The children were very sweet and said thank you and Happy Christmas. They always seem to like my presents.”

The Princess of Wales was heard asking her youngest son what the wooden gift was. “It’s a money box,” said Prince Louis. “Oh that’s so cool, isn’t it,” his mother replied.

Mia Tindall helped the Princess with flowers.
