Prince William’s brutal 10-word assessment of Meghan Markle that left Prince Harry ‘hurt’
According to Prince Harry, Prince William gave a very surprising response to him opening up about his relationship with Meghan Markle.
Their relationship is currently at rock bottom after a very public feud – but it wasn’t always the case for Prince William and Prince Harry.
The royal brothers previously shared a close bond with Harry spending lots of time with his older sibling as well as his wife Kate when Harry was still a bachelor. So when Harry eventually found love and started dating wife Meghan Markle, it was natural he wanted to tell William his happy news. But when he plucked up the courage to tell his brother and sister-in-law about his new girlfriend, William seemingly had a brutal 10-word reaction to his younger brother.
Prince Harry used to spend a lot of time with his brother, and also formed a close bond with Princess Kate.
When Harry began dating Meghan Markle, he undoubtedly couldn’t wait to tell his brother and sister-in-law.
Harry recounts the story of telling William and Kate about his dates with Meghan in his controversial memoir Spare, which was released almost exactly a year ago. Harry writes, how he told the shocked pair about his new girlfriend and was stunned to learn they were fans of Suits, the show former actress Meghan had appeared in.
He then recalls how he told them he couldn’t wait for them to meet her and how he looked forward to the four of them spending lots of time together. But despite Harry being seemingly smitten, he claims that William told him to ‘slow down’. And he issued him a warning: “She’s an American actress, after all, Harold. Anything might happen.” Harry says he nodded and was left “a bit hurt” before they all hugged and William and Kate left.
The first time they all met was in 2016 when William and Kate were invited over to have dinner at Nottingham Cottage, Harry and Meghan’s home at Kensington Palace. In Spare, Harry notes how Meghan cooked and that all seemed to be going well as they chatted about Wimbledon and the legal drama Suits.
However, Meghan also took aim at Kate during her and Harry’s Netflix docuseries on their first meeting. As she recalled their first meeting she said she was “surprised” by the behind-the-scenes formality of members of the royal family. Speaking in episode two of the six-part Harry & Meghan docuseries, she said: “When Will and Kate came over, and I met her for the first time, they came over for dinner, I remember I was in ripped jeans and I was barefoot. I was a hugger. I’ve always been a hugger, I didn’t realise that that is really jarring for a lot of Brits.
But when Harry opened up, William reportedly gave a very brutal 10-word response to his brother’s new relationship.
“I guess I started to understand very quickly that the formality on the outside carried through on the inside. There is a forward-facing way of being, and then you close the door and go ‘You can relax now’, but that formality carries over on both sides. And that was surprising to me.”
