The Prince and Princess of Wales have decided to sleep in separate bedrooms. But what contributed to this decision? Is it really all about habit?

You might be surprised to learn the reason why Prince William of Wales and his wife Princess Catherine of Wales chose to sleep in separate rooms.

Journalists noticed that the future King and Queen of the United Kingdom sleep on two different beds. This observation was made while the couple was travelling in England.

Having learnt about it, many might have thought that there was a crisis in their flawless relationship, but the cousin of the late Prince Philip, Lady Pamela Hicks, managed to clarify the situation.

The royal explained that separate beds, and even separate bedrooms, are quite common among the English aristocracy. This is done so that during sleep the spouses do not disturb each other with snoring or kicking.

Queen Elizabeth II and her husband Prince Philip followed this tradition. It is likely that King Charles III and Queen Camilla also follow this rule, as they have three bedrooms in their home – one shared and two others “for him” and “for her”.

Although it is not known whether William and Catherine practice sleeping in separate beds on a regular basis, this habit can be very beneficial for a young couple who need to get enough sleep and be fit to fulfil their royal duties.

The Prince and Princess of Wales separated into their private rooms as soon as they took over Adelaide Cottage in Windsor last year. The accommodation was modest compared to their previous home on the Norfolk estate, but the four bedrooms were enough to accommodate the family comfortably – Princess Catherine didn’t even have to redecorate.

Most ordinary people, when this happens, most likely think of a cooling relationship. Meanwhile, sleep experts from Loughborough University see nothing wrong with this situation. According to scientists, women need 20 minutes more sleep than men because of differences in brain function. Having her own bedroom can at least mean that the Princess of Wales is getting the necessary sleep duration, which is very important for daytime activity and the ability to cope with stress. Moreover, Her Highness has been known to have trouble falling asleep in the past.

In addition, spouses who choose different bedrooms do not have to argue over bedroom temperature, bed linen texture and sleep patterns. This contributes to a fulfilling rest, which, on the contrary, can only improve the couple’s relationship.

For the occasion, the Princess of Wales wore a green Emilia Wickstead dress, while Princess Victoria opted for a red tweed jacket from Alice + Olivia. Both princes looked sharp in suits.
